The History of Cabo Rico Yachts

A "Passage to Perfection" not only describes the philosophy, commitment to quality and unique history of Cabo Rico Yachts, one of the world's premier semi-custom boat builders; it also describes the end result. Intelligently engineered and superbly built Cabo Rico Yachts. A Cabo Rico Yacht, made to your order, will take you quickly, safely and comfortably on any passage to the destinations of your dreams, wherever they may be.

The history of Cabo Rico Yachts is truly is unique in the boat building industry. We were born almost 40 years ago in a corner of the British Leland assembly plant in San Jose, Costa Rica, through a yachtsman's love for boating. This man, John Schofield OBE, knew firsthand the craftsmanship and work ethic exhibited by Costa Ricans, who are highly skilled and well educated. They have lived with pride in a politically stable democracy for well over 100 years- Costa Rica, the Switzerland of the Americas.

This dedicated and loyal labor force, with an average tenure of over 15 years, is our greatest strength. They combine an eagerness to constantly improve and learn new techniques with top skills and true pride in their work. They take the time necessary to give attention to each detail. The expertise and care they apply to every facet of the boat building process is their integral contribution to our "Passage to Perfection."

Our artisans use only the finest materials available worldwide. The exquisite, honey colored Costa Rican teak is plantation grown and, due to the far-thinking environmental and ecological policies of this prosperous little country, will continue to be grown and grace our boats. All of the thousands of components are sourced by our Cabo Rico Yachts head office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. You know these respected names: Harken, Schaefer, Profurl, Edson, Lewmar, Force 10, Yanmar, Raritan, Corian ... to mention but a few.

Now, when you add to all this, the world's finest naval architects, 4 engineers on staff, perhaps the best warranty in the industry, plus the advice and knowledge our Florida staff provides our customers with years of combined boating experience, you can see that we are committed to holding a true course on our continuing "Passage to Perfection."

The company has been owned and operated by only two families in its 39 year history and since the mid-eighties that has been Canadians, Fraser and Edi Smith.

About Motorsailer Sailboats

Motorsailers use both sails and engines as their form of propulsion. The sails are used as the primary power when out sailing and the inboard engine is used when in the harbor or offshore. This sailing vessel is usually seen as a pleasure yacht.
