Lucky Dog in St. Augustine, FL

Lucky Dog is a very well-kept 1996 Island Gypsy 44 Motor Cruiser. Built in Hong Kong, the Island Gypsy 44 was constructed to provide safe and comfortable long-range, blue-water cruising. The vessel was built by the well-respected Kong & Halvorsen Company, which built vessels under the Kong & Halvorsen, Island Gypsy, and Halvorsen names.

 

Lucky Dog features walk-around decks which lead to a large bow area. The large hard-top covered flybridge with forward guest seating is the perfect place to relax at the end of a long day of cruising, while at anchor, or docked at your favorite marina. The teak interior highlights the pedigree of this beautiful vessel. The dark blue hull and teak transom evoke yachts from an earlier era.

 

The original owner was an owner of one of the oldest insurance agencies in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, so Lucky Dog has cruised the Virgin Islands and West Indies. The current owner is the fourth owner, and purchased Lucky Dog in the Upper Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in 2016. He single-handed her to Florida then cruised the Florida Keys and the Bahamas before settling in Palm Beach Gardens. 

 

In 2020 Lucky Dog was put on the hard for two years and had a complete and thorough bottom job. The topside, flybridge, decking and dinghy deck were all repainted with Awlgrip and Alexseal paints and the exterior teak was all refinished. The windows were all resealed in November, 2022.

 

Lucky Dog has been approved by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) of the Department of Transportation for a coastwise endorsement for a foreign-built vessel which will carry no more than 12 passengers for hire, so she is eligible to use as a charter vessel, and has been USCG inspected.

 

It is now time for Lucky Dog to find a new master so she can move on to her next adventure.

Standard features: Walk-Through The aft covered cockpit of Lucky Dog has double doors that provide access to the salon. The salon settee is to starboard. The inside helm is forward to starboard, with a door leading to the walk-around deck. The dinette is across from the inside helm to port. There are three steps down to the galley to port. The guest/bunk stateroom is on the same level across from the galley, to starboard. The day head is forward of the guest/bunk stateroom. The ensuite master stateroom is forward. Engine room access is through hatches in the salon sole. Cockpit and Swim Platform Lucky Dog can be boarded by the swim platform and through the transom door to starboard, or over the cockpit gunnels. The cockpit of Lucky Dog is covered by the flybridge deck. The entire cockpit is ¾” glued-down natural teak, and the area is large enough for a table and chairs for alfresco dining. The gunnels are a combination of varnished teak with natural teak inserts.   A stainless steel ladder with natural teak steps leads to the flybridge, to starboard. A hatch on the flybridge deck can be closed over the ladder. One 50amp shore power connection (non-operational) is to starboard, as well as a TV cable connection, a dockside water connection, a hot/cold shower, and a storage cabinet.   The louvered door storage cabinet to port houses the Equator Super Combo Washer/Dryer. A seat next to the cabinet has a Sunbrella cushion and storage under the seat. Two deck hatches open to reveal lazarette storage. The cockpit has two stereo speakers, a security camera, and the sub-woofer for the Fusion stereo system. The large dark blue fiberglass non-skid swim platform has an integrated swim ladder with four teak steps. Hull The Island Gypsy 44 Motor Cruiser was built on a sold fiberglass semi-displacement hull with hard aft chines and a full-length prop protecting keel. The dark blue hull of Lucky Dog was sprayed with Imron in 2004. Deck and Foredeck The rails on Lucky Dog are heavy duty stainless steel. The sidewalk to starboard features: ¾” glued-down natural teak, a varnished teak toe rail, a stainless steel grab bar, and one step up to the foredeck forward of the sliding pilothouse door. There are two fuel tank fills, and a 50amp shore power connection at the pilothouse door.   The sidewalk to port features: ¾” glued-down natural teak, a varnished teak toe rail, a stainless steel grab bar, and one step up to the foredeck. There are two fuel tank fills and one holding tank port.   The large foredeck on Lucky Dog features: a non-skid fiberglass surface, leading up to the fiberglass bow pulpit. There are three deck hatches, one to the master stateroom forward, one to the guest/bunk stateroom to starboard, and one to the galley to port. The center of the foredeck is natural teak, leading to the fold-down steps in the flybridge combing.   The fold-down steps are a unique feature of the Island Gypsy 44 Motor Cruiser. They provide direct access from the flybridge to the bow for line handling. They also provide access to the bridge for a dog which cannot negotiate the ladder from the cockpit. While docked, they keep guests on the flybridge connected to guests on the foredeck. Two large speakers are connected to the Fusion stereo system. The bow features: two double stainless steel fender racks mounted on the bow rail, a burgee pole and a spotlight on the pulpit, and a freshwater wash-down with expandable hose. Two fresh water tank fills are to starboard.   The ground tackle includes: a Galley Maid windlass with foot controls, (1) 30kg Lewmar Bruce galvanized anchor with 130’ of 3/8” chain (new 01/2021) plus 100’ of additional line, and (1) 30kg CQR galvanized anchor with 30’ of chain plus 150’ of additional line.  There is a split anchor locker with weep holes. The Kahlenberg dual trumpet horns to port need a new compressor. Flybridge The flybridge on Lucky Dog is reached by a stainless steel ladder, with teak stairs, eight steps up from the cockpit, which can be covered with the sliding hatch cover. The deck is fiberglass non-skid. The flybridge will become one of the favorite places on Lucky Dog for you and your guests. The flybridge has a three sided white Stamoid enclosure with Eisenglass windows, new in 10/2022. The flybridge features a fiberglass hardtop with aluminum supports, and Plexiglas windscreen. The Sunbrella covered captain and navigator chairs each have convenient footrests. The upper helm station on Lucky Dog is set back, with guest seating and dining space forward, which provides a great deal of outdoor living space.   A straight settee is to starboard, and an L-shaped settee is in front of the helm station and to port. The cushions are the same Sunbrella fabric as the cockpit cushion and the helm chairs. There is also spare, unused fabric that conveys with the vessel, in case cushions need to be repaired or replaced. All of the cushions can be removed to access the large storage areas beneath them and there are two storage cabinets forward. A double pedestal table, with the map of the Gulf of Mexico is positioned in front of the L-shaped settee, and is perfect for dining.   The flybridge on Lucky Dog also features: storage at the helm station, a red light over the helm station for night vision, lights in the hardtop, two 10” Fusion stereo speakers, two GFI 110V electrical outlet, two rocket launcher style rod holders, and a stainless steel steering wheel.    The two “pony” propane tanks with cross over twin regulators are in proper USCG approved storage on the flybridge.   Aft of the helm station is the tender storage. A UMT electric davit crane has a 1200# capacity. UMT tender chocks hold the 2013 West Marine hard bottomed RIB tender outfitted with a 15hp Mercury outboard motor. Accommodations SALON The salon on Lucky Dog is entered from the cockpit through teak and tempered glass double doors. Removable sun shades snap on the outside of the doors. The extensive interior woodwork is Burmese teak. The teak and holly sole is covered with bound edge carpeting, and can be easily removed to get access to the hatches to the engine room. The sole under the carpeting does show some water stains, but has no damage.   The corner cabinet aft to starboard has sliding doors and is currently used as a printer station, taking advantage of the 110V electrical outlet in the cabinet. The salon settee is covered in a neutral fabric. Drawer storage is under the settee at one end. The Webasto 24,000 BTU reverse cycle AC/heat unit for the salon is also located under the settee. A small table, which conveys with the vessel, is in front of the settee.   Forward of the settee is an end table. The AC electric panel is forward in the end table. A leatherette recliner is next to the end table, facing aft.   The salon on Lucky Dog has a three shelf bookcase aft to port under the mounted TV. The sound bar with the TV does not convey with the vessel, although the TV does. This open area currently features a wooden table used as a desk; the table does not convey with the vessel. There is a cabinet forward which houses the Fusion stereo as well as storage.   The windows all have wood blinds; there are rod mounts on the wood valances over the side windows. The center window of the triple windshield opens for ventilation. The windshield windows are tinted from the inside, and have sun covers on the outside.   The salon also features: a teak hand hold at the ceiling, five LED ceiling lights, and two JL Audio stereo speakers.   DINETTE The dinette is to port on Lucky Dog across from the helm station. It is one step up, and has a teak and holly sole. The two facing dinette bench seats and back are neutral leather. Four people can comfortably dine at the Corian table. There are two LED lights over the dinette. The table can convert to an additional berth.   There is storage in the sole of the dinette, as well as in drawers under the bench seats.   LOWER HELM STATION   The inside helm is to starboard forward of the settee and end table. There is a beautiful teak steering wheel, and a compliment of electronics integrated with the electronics on the flybridge. A sliding door at the helm station leads to the starboard deck, with one step with storage.   The DC electric panel is under the helm station at the steps leading to the galley.   GALLEY The galley on Lucky Dog is to port, forward of the salon, down three steps, and has a U-shape design. The positioning of the galley to the dinette allows the galley crew the ability to pass items directly to the dinette for ease of serving. There is good counter space, with a white Corian counter; the molded-in Corian sink features a single lever fixture with pull-out faucet. A UV filtered fresh water purifying system is located next to the sink. The sole is teak and holly. The galley appliances on Lucky Dog include: a Grunert side loading cold plate refrigerator with 3” insulated storage box, a deep Grunert in-counter cold plate freezer with 3” insulated storage box which can hold to -20F, and a Princess three burner propane range and oven with a hinged Corian cover, a propane sensor, shutoff valve, and two tank regulator. The compressor for the Grunert cold plate refrigeration system was replaced in 08/2021. Lucky Dog has great galley storage, which includes: two double door upper cabinets aft, one double door upper cabinet forward, four drawers next to the oven/range, a pot drawer under the oven/range, storage in the top step leading from the salon, a deep in-counter storage bin, a double door two shelf cabinet under the sink, and an open shelf over the sink.  The galley also features: a wall mounted fire extinguisher, an exhaust fan over the range with exterior venting, three LED ceiling lights, two GFI 110V electrical outlets, a CO detector, and a control for the reverse cycle AC/heat unit. A portlight and screened hatch provide natural light and ventilation.   There are ceiling lights in the companionway outside the day/guest head and the master stateroom.   MASTER STATEROOM The master stateroom on Lucky Dog is forward through a two-panel teak door. It features a custom Handcraft centerline queen berth with two teak steps on either side. There are teak walls with two opening screened and curtained portlights on each side of the master stateroom for fresh air and ventilation. The bulkhead walls are teak; the sole is teak and holly. The master stateroom storage includes: a hinged valet cabinet on each side of the berth, a hinged valet cabinet at the head of the berth, a locking Formica lined vented hanging locker on each side of the stateroom with added hanging space behind the horizontal hanging bar, three drawers under the berth, and storage under the berth. The reverse cycle AC/heat unit is also under the berth.   There is a hinged screen opening hatch over the berth that leads to the foredeck, access to the split anchor locker at the head of the berth, and a full length bulkhead mirror across from the berth. The master stateroom also has: two reading lights, four overhead LED lights, courtesy lights under the berth, two GFI 110V electrical outlets, a control for the reverse cycle AC/heat, a fire extinguisher, a smoke detector, a TV which conveys with the vessel, a sound bar on the TV which does not convey with the vessel, Sonos speakers which do not convey with the vessel, and two wired Polk Audio speakers which are non-operational.   The ensuite head is to port across from the berth.   MASTER HEAD The ensuite master head is to port on Lucky Dog, with a step-over threshold to the teak and holly sole. The vanity features: a molded-in vanity sink with a single lever faucet, a small drawer, and a two shelf cabinet under the sink. An opening screened and curtained portlight is over the vanity for fresh air and ventilation. A small medicine cabinet is cleverly mounted on the mirrored bulkhead.    There is a Raritan electric head with an independently controlled Y discharge valve, a Tank Watch monitoring system, an exhaust fan, an LED ceiling light, a GFI 110V electrical outlet, a stainless steel towel rack over the head, and a door hook.    The separate stall shower features: a bi-fold Plexiglas door, a tiled sole, Formica walls, an LED ceiling light, and an adjustable shower fixture. GUEST/BUNK STATEROOM The guest/bunk stateroom is amidships to starboard on Lucky Dog across from the galley. It features an upper and lower bunk configuration and a teak and holly sole. A desk/make-up table is aft in front of a mirrored bulkhead. Storage is available in the drawer at the desk/make-up table, in the drawer under the lower berth, and in the double door lighted hanging locker forward.   Two opening screened and curtained portlights, a screened hatch leading to the foredeck, as well as a reading light and two overhead LED lights provide plenty of lighting. The guest/bunk stateroom also features: a fire extinguisher, a smoke detector, and a control for the reverse cycle AC/heat. DAY/GUEST HEAD The day/guest head is located across from the galley, forward of the guest/bunk stateroom on Lucky Dog. The day/guest head is a “wet head” but the shower is non-operational.   The vanity features: a molded-in vanity sink with a single lever faucet, a small drawer, and a two shelf cabinet under the sink.
