The Ocean Alexander 420 Sun Deck Motor Yacht checks all of the boxes. It has a sun deck, cockpit, and swim platform so it is a very versatile vessel. With a bridge clearance of 16’1” it is capable to do America’s Great Loop. It is a very manageable size, with good sight lines while cruising. The inside lower helm gives you an option for cruising in foul weather.

Happy Place has two staterooms and two heads, both with separate stall showers, so it is perfect for a cruising couple or family. It has the power to cross to the islands or traverse the Gulf at a comfortable cruising speed of 9.5-10 knots, or pick up the pace when it needs to get where it is going!

The original owner of Happy Place owned her for 30 years. He was directly involved in her design and construction and made numerous trips to Taiwan to witness the construction. He was an airplane pilot and very conscientious about maintenance and safety. The oil on this vessel has been changed every 100 hours, without fail.

The current owners are very experienced and knowledgeable sailors who spent years sailing in the BVIs and USVIs. It was a “bucket list” item to live-aboard a motor yacht in the Bahamas. They purchased Happy Place in 2021 and just returned from the Bahamas in June 2022. They are now ready to begin some land cruising, so Happy Place is now available.

The owner reports that Happy Place tops out at 2300-2400 RPM. They cruise comfortably at 9.5-10 knots at 1900 RPM with a fuel burn rate of 1.5 miles per gallons. Make her your Happy Place!

Standard features: Walk Through Happy Place can be boarded from her swim platform through a transom door or over the gunnels into the cockpit, then up a wide ladder onto the sun deck. There are also railing openings on either side deck. The bridge is up a few steps from the sun deck to port. There is a door from the sun deck to starboard, down several steps into the salon. A sliding door at the interior helm station also leads into the salon from the starboard side deck. A centerline set of steps lead down to the galley to port and guest/day head to starboard. The guest berth is forward of the galley. The master stateroom is down a few steps, aft of the salon. Accommodations SALON The large salon is five steps down from the sun deck on Happy Place, through a sliding door. The stairs have a beautiful teak handrail which shows the quality of the joinery on this vessel. The sole is teak parquet with a bound fitted carpet. There are large curtained windows to port and starboard and two windshield windows forward which let in plenty of natural light. An L-shaped settee is to port. The neutral vinyl cushions have full storage under them. If the back cushions are removed, the settee can be used for additional berths. The aft section also has drawer storage at the steps to the master stateroom. There is a curtained window behind the aft section to the sun deck, with open storage between the window and the settee, which is where the vessel manuals are currently stowed. One screened window behind the settee opens for ventilation. There are two brass swing-arm lamps over the settee for lighting. In front of the settee is an attractive, versatile, tri-fold hi-lo polished teak table. In its folded position and lowered it serves as a unique coffee table. In its higher position and unfolded it’s a perfect dining table. Two stools are stored underneath providing additional seating. Six or seven people can be seated comfortably for dining or game playing. This is the primary interior dining space for Happy Place. A teak counter, forward, holds the TCL TV and also serves as a pass through or buffet for food from the galley. The Sherwood stereo system at the counter is non-operational. The interior helm is forward to starboard, with a gorgeous teak steering wheel, which is a hallmark of all Ocean Alexander yachts. A helm station door with a curtained window leads outside to starboard. When this door is open there is cross ventilation when the window to port is also open. The step under this door opens for storage, as does the bottom step leading into the salon from the aft deck. A free standing, reclining chair is to starboard. One of the stools can conveniently be used as an ottoman. A U-Line ice maker is under the aft steps from the sun deck. It has been converted to a freezer, as it does not make ice. (While in the Bahamas, the current owners needed freezer space more than additional ice making capabilities.) A small cabinet with access above the freezer is for storage. The salon on Happy Place also features: four LED ceiling lights on two separate switches, courtesy lights under the teak valances at the windows, headroom of 6’4”, two speakers, 110V electrical outlets, and an EPIRB. GALLEY The galley on Happy Place is forward and three steps down from the salon. The AC/DC electrical panel is to starboard at the steps. The steps lift to provide additional access to the engine room. The large U-shaped galley is to port; the openness to the salon allows the cook on duty to interface with guests in the salon. The galley is well laid out and organized, with a lot of storage. The beautiful teak parquet sole continues in the galley. There is a bound area rug covering part of the sole. The galley features: a neutral Formica countertop, dual deep stainless steel sinks with a single lever faucet, a curtained opening portlight with screen, and a fire extinguisher. There is an 110V electrical outlet for small kitchen appliances as well as an 110V GFI electrical outlet near the cooktop. Under-counter lighting illuminates the counter and the cooktop, and there is courtesy lighting at the floor. Storage is available in: two deep in-counter storage areas, a two shelf cabinet at counter level near the sinks, four drawers under the built-in cutting board, a separate large drawer over a double door two shelf cabinet, a corresponding large drawer over a double door two shelf cabinet under the cooktop, and a large double door cabinet over the refrigerator/freezer which once housed the TV and has an electrical outlet. Other galley features on Happy Place include: a mounted teak paper towel holder, a teak spice rack, two teak knife blocks, a triple brass hook over the sinks, and a triple teak hook at the cooktop. The appliances include: a three burner electric cooktop, a Sharp Carousel Grill 2 convection/microwave oven, a 2018 Vitrifrigo AC/DC refrigerator/freezer with security latches and organizing bins, and a GE Monogram trash compactor. A NuTone blender is built into the counter, but the blender pitcher is not present. MASTER STATEROOM The full-beam master stateroom is aft and four steps down from the salon on Happy Place. All of the beautiful teak joinery including the parquet sole and double panel doors continues into the master stateroom, with ensuite head. The door into the master stateroom has a unique bi-fold, which allows for the bi-fold door cabinet housing the Splendide 2000 washer/dryer to fit behind the door, to starboard. There are also two louvered door storage cabinets at the bulkhead. The sculpted centerline Queen berth is over the fuel tank. The fuel tank sight glass is mounted under the berth. The water tank is under the fuel tank; access to the water tank is from the cockpit. There is a shelf behind the berth; above the berth at the aft bulkhead are two large hatches with shades, which open to the cockpit. A full length mirror is to port beside the door leading into the ensuite head. There are curtained opening screened windows on both sides of the master stateroom, which can provide cross ventilation. One window on the port side is cracked but does not leak. The master stateroom storage on Happy Place includes, to starboard: three double door two shelf cabinets, five lower drawers (and two “dummy” drawers), a double door lower cabinet, and a two shelf upper cabinet. The nightstand has a drawer and a two shelf cabinet. The storage to port includes: a large curved corner cabinet, which houses the cablemaster storage bin, three curved lower drawers, two straight lower drawers (and one “dummy” drawer), and a double door upper cabinet. The nightstand to port also has a drawer and a two shelf cabinet. A large lighted hanging locker is forward across from the berth; one side is full length and one side is ¾ length. The master stateroom also features: LED ceiling fixtures, two reading lights, two speakers, a fire extinguisher, six 110V electrical outlets, headroom of 6’2”, two wall mounted storage racks, three portable book racks, brass hanging hooks, and the control for the aft 16,000BTU Marine Air reverse cycle AC/heat unit. The molded sink has a single lever faucet. A teak two shelf storage cabinet is at counter level. The teak vanity features storage in a small drawer and the double door cabinet under the sink. A curtained opening screened window is over the vanity. There is also a small shaving mirror behind the curtain. There is a large mirror on the bulkhead behind the Vacuflush head, headroom of 6’2”, an LED ceiling fixture, and two towel bars. A separate fiberglass stall shower features: a bi-fold tempered glass door, a removable shower head, a light, a shelf, two towel bars, a non-skid sole, and a retractable laundry line. VIP/GUEST STATEROOM The VIP/guest stateroom is forward of the galley on Happy Place down one step, through a beautiful teak two panel door. The teak parquet floor is protected by a fitted Berber carpet with bound edges. This stateroom features a high double berth to port and a lower single berth to starboard. Both berths have ample storage areas with hinged covers under the mattresses. A triangular step is between the berths. Headroom in the VIP/guest stateroom is 6’6”. The bulkhead walls and headliner are neutral vinyl. There is a full length mirror on the aft bulkhead, to port. A lighted, double door, two shelf cabinet has a Craftsman tool chest, outfitted with multiple tools, which conveys with the vessel. A storage drawer is under the cabinet. There are three drawers and a double door cabinet under the berth to port. The berth to starboard is over two small drawers and a double door cabinet. Aft of the berth is a lighted hanging locker. A hamper is built-in at the floor in front of the hanging locker. There is access to the bilge with room for storage in the sole. The anchor locker is forward of the berths through double doors. There is a large opening ceiling hatch, two curtained opening screened portlights, and a shelf along the bulkhead to starboard. The VIP/guest stateroom also features: a fire extinguisher, two LED ceiling fixtures, two reading lights, courtesy lighting under the wood valances at both bulkheads, two speakers, three 110V electrical outlets, and the control for the new forward 16,000BTU Dometic reverse cycle AC/heat unit. GUEST/DAY HEAD Entry to the guest/day head on Happy Place is across from the galley, to starboard, through a double panel door. The sole is non-skid fiberglass. The molded sink has a single lever faucet. The teak vanity features storage in a small drawer and the double door two shelf cabinet under the sink. A curtained opening screened portlight is over the vanity, under a mirrored bulkhead. There is a double door cabinet on the bulkhead behind the Vacuflush head, headroom of 6’2”, an LED ceiling fixture, a 110V GFI electrical outlet, and three towel bars. A separate fiberglass stall shower features: a bi-fold tempered glass door, a removable shower head, a light, a shelf, two towel bars, a non-skid sole, and a retractable laundry line. A lockable access to the lower helm electric connections is in the shower. Cockpit and Swim Platform The cockpit on Happy Place is entered through a transom door, which opens out, to starboard from the swim platform, or over the gunnels. The gunnels have rubber grip steps for safety. The swim platform has a three step fold down swim ladder, a courtesy light, and clips for mounting a tender. Access to the lazarette is in the non-skid sole of the cockpit. The cockpit also features: three rod holders in the transom, and seven mounted rocket launcher rod holders, the Capstan 300 Powerwinch, a throw ring, two hatches into the aft cabin, and courtesy lights. There are a total of four hawse pipe cleats. The fill to the fresh water tank is to port, and the fill to the fuel tank is to starboard. A cabinet to port houses: the Glendinning Cablemaster, a hot/cold shower, a 110V electrical outlet, two dockside water connections, a TV/cable connection, and a 125V/30amp connection. It is four steps up to the sun deck. The wide ladder steps have non-slip surfaces with heavy duty stainless steel rails and a safety chain. A freshwater wash down connection is under the ladder. Aft Deck/Sun Deck The full beam sun deck is one of the favorite features of the Ocean Alexander 420 motor yacht. The sun deck is open to the cockpit, the bridge, and the side decks to the foredeck. A 7’ deck box with a Sunbrella dark blue canvas cushion and two white vinyl back bolsters is aft across the sun deck and provides guest seating. The decks, sidewalks, and foredeck are all white non-skid. Cleats are available forward on the sun deck, mid ship, and at the bow. The handrails are all sturdy stainless steel, and feature openings to both port and starboard. There are two double fender racks mounted on the rail at the bow. There is one opening hatch. There are courtesy lights under the super structure which light up the decks. Access to the waste tanks is on the starboard sidewalk. Hull and Construction The Ocean Alexander 420 Sun Deck features a modified-V hull. It has cored hull sides, a shallow keel and moderate transom deadrise. It was a very popular model in the 1990s and was made as both a 420 and 440, with the difference being the size of the cockpit. It was known to incorporate some European styling characteristics. As with most vessels constructed in Taiwan, the teak joinery is exceptional.
