Such has been the success of Windy's famous Chinook sports cruiser that has undergone not one but two mid-life updates.

The latest sees an extensive upgrade to its standard specification, including more capable navigation electronics and hardwood floors, and a much expanded options list, at the top of which is the new, longer hydraulic stern platform, giving the latest incarnation of this ground-breaking boat its name: the Chinook 46.

The original Chinook was launched at the Düsseldorf boat show back in 2008, which is a lifetime ago in today’s model terms.

It built on the legacy of two previous Windy models: the long-lived 43 Typhoon, which had been a feature of the range for eight years, and the ever-popular 37 Grand Mistral, which also remains a firm favorite in the brokerage market.

A secure yet sociable cockpit was key to the concept, with extra length and beam put to excellent use on the new hardtop cruiser. A family-oriented, three-cabin layout remains at the centre of the new Chinook, complete with lower saloon – an array of amenities which few rivals attempt to match, even now. "All the rival boats in this length, from the Italian and British yards, have two cabins," Windy CEO Knut Heiberg-Andersen observed at the launch of the original 44. "So we have three."
Three double cabins, two head compartments, a lower saloon and spacious cockpit – it's not hard to see why the Chinook had already become the leading middleweight sports cruiser of its era even before the 'mark 2' version, the 45, was introduced in 2013. It is featured an extended hardtop, new hull windows and a superyacht standard interior by the renowned designer Peder Eidsgaard.

"Like all Windys, the Chinook remains focused on the driving experience," contends Ben Toogood of Berthon, Windy's UK distributor. "It's mass-production competitors increasingly seem to be focused on accommodation volume and interior design, to try and win market share at boat shows. that's fine, but they can't compete with a Windy on the water – it will be faster, and probably more economical as well." He adds that the Chinook remains a high-quality, luxury product, even though it is priced very competitively.

"Windy is not tied to the model year idea like some brands," said Heiberg-Andersen. "We firmly believe in getting the boat right, and then listening to our customers. The two previous versions of the Chinook have been so successful for us that we had no doubts whatsoever that continuing to invest in the line was the right thing to do. We have a lot of owner feedback to plough back in. "Like the original 44, the latest model is also available with a choice of Volvo Penta sterndrive or IPS. The first of the fabulous new Windy 46 Chinooks will be exhibited at the 2016 Düsseldorf boat show.
