~J/100 ... Perfect for a Daysail

There's nothing quite like steering a sleek, fast boat with a light touch on the tiller, the stability of a keel below, being close to the water and sliding through waves with barely a wake or whisper.

Ones standard of acceleration and that feeling of being one with wind, wave and boat probably started on a small dinghya Hobie Cat, Sunfish or inland scow. Then as ones boats got larger, some of the magic faded. Sure, cruising was an adventure and the camaraderie of a winning race crew unforgettable. But, now it seems theres less time for such pursuits. Priorities change. Every moment counts. Times too precious and the alternatives too numerous to put up with any boat less than what will recapture those simple joys of sailing. J/100 is designed to do just that.

The comforts that experienced sailors appreciate are part of the package. A two-cylinder inboard sail-drive hums quietly along at 6.5 knots like, barely audible on deck. Why limit your horizons because the wind might die? Theres a bona fide marine head and even a couple of bunks with an option for a V-berth forward for the occasional overnight. A dodger works to extend the sailing season, as does a nice boom tent for extended weekender cruising.

If you plan to single-hand the boat or do some relaxed non-spinnaker racing, the Hoyt jib boom shown above works great! Using this system, TERN won what one captain called, the race from hellthe 2004 Maine Retired (Age 65+) Skippers Race. In dense fog, torrential rain, lightning, and 40 degree windshifts, the J/100 excelled. No need to overwork the crew or have anyone on the foredeck when theres a self-tacking jib and automatic whisker pole. TERN tacked effortlessly on 10 degree shifts, winning the trophy for the fastest of 38 starters. Five minutes back were larger boats with more crew, big winches and huge genoas.

If the joy of sailing is a priority the feel of acceleration and response of a good boat we believe youll find this J to be 100% perfect for your days sail!

Infusion Construction

Infusion is a method of introducing catalyzed resin into a pre-layout of dry material under vacuum. Dry fibers are placed in mold, with core (Balsa or Foam). Which is then covered by a special flow cloth and a flexible vacuum bag, a high pressure vacuum is then applied and a series of resin tubes draw the catalyzed resin into the part.

The result is a high quality method of production which produces results repeatedly and consistently. It allows dimensional control and regularity of weight and unlike a pre-impregnation process, infusion does not require special materials storage conditions, nor an oven.

An economic and reproducible process, direct positioning of dry fibers is easier and more precise than in traditional hand lay-up processes. It also allows controlled placement of fiber direction, as it is not impeded by gel times etc The perfect control of the quantity of resin infused and the dry placement cloth make it possible to obtain extremely homogeneous finished parts.

The weight variation of the piece is very small (1 to 2% only), a performance which is impossible to achieve with hand lamination.

Healthy working conditions: Working with dry materials does away with most exposure to resin & styrene, and does not require special protection, masks, gloves etc... During infusion and curing the styrene remains contained in the bag, thus reducing the emission of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) to less than 10 ppm.
