The masthead instruments include a wind direction and speed indicator, and connect via a wire traveling down the mast and through the coachroof at the base of the mast - In the ceiling of the main cabin, the wires coming through the coachroof connect to the pre-installed wires that then travel to the instruments on the side of the companionway, etc. - This connection is concealed in the ceiling of the cabin just under the mast step - This allowed both the mast and the boat to be pre-wired and wires connected after stepping the mast into place - The VHF antennae and the mast head light wires also traverse this same route - When the boat was put on the trailer, and the mast lowered, the wires were cut at the base of the mast outside of the coachroof in a position where they can be easily spliced together - However, this splice will be exposed to weather - It might be a good idea to take this opportunity to replace the wiring and the main halyard in the mast before stepping the mast, and make the wiring connections inside the dry cabin - Most instruments on mastheads now are wireless, which would be another consideration - If you go with the current set-up, the cockpit instruments should be fine.
